Solution

To set up your mailbox with IMAP in Mozilla Thunderbird:

1. Start Thunderbird.

2. Click on the "Tools" menu and then on "Account Settings".

3. Below the list in the left part of the dialog box that contains existing mailboxes, click on "Account Actions" and then on "Add Email Account ..."

4. Enter the visible sender name in the "Your name" field. Here you can enter any text, e.g. also your company. Enter the e-mail address of the mailbox in the "E-mail address" field. In the field "Password" belongs the password of the mailbox. Leave the "Save password" box checked. After you have entered this data, click on the "Next" button.

5. Thunderbird tries to find the settings for your e-mail account automatically. If you do not have any autoconfigure information as files in your webspace account, this will not work. While Thunderbird is still searching, click on the "Edit manually" button.

6. Use the drop-down box next to the inbox server line to select whether you want to use the mailbox as an IMAP or POP3 mailbox.

7. Change the server address and username fields. In the field "server address" you do not enter your domain, but the host name of your server. It is structured as follows: .bitpalast.net. Your individual host name has been communicated to you in the server setup mail, e.g. elbe.bitpalast.net, rhein.bitpalast.net etc. Add nothing. So do not add, for example, an imap. or pop3. in front of the hostname. Enter only the host name. In the field "username" enter your complete e-mail address.

8. Click the "test again" button. Thunderbird will now adjust the ports and encryption of the access to match the access data. If the connection to the host fails in this step, check your e-mail address and password. Follow the instructions in the related FAQ articles.

9. Click the “Done” button.
